First Aid
Do you know what to do in an emergency?
On Tuesday 26th November, Christina from Mini First Aid came to visit us. In Ash and Elm Class, we met her big teddy bear friend called Teddy.
Teddy had fallen off his chair and bumped his head. The children were fantastic at showing Teddy how to put on a cold compress until his head felt better. Teddy also cut their knee but luckily, Christina taught us why it was important to wash our wounds before we apply a plaster. We all took turns putting a plaster on Teddy. Christina told us about the importance of knowing our home address and shouting for help just in case we ever need to ring 999 for an ambulance.
"It was really fun! We got to learn what to do in case of an emergency. You have to tell them what happened and where we live." Darius
"We put plasters on Teddy but he fell again and didn't wake up! We made a loud noise and patted his shoulders but he still didn't wake up so we had to call for help." Oliver
"We had to call 999, three nines, and roll Teddy onto his side." Sofia
In Maple and Oak Class, Christina taught us how to save somebody's life. The children learnt about calling 999 in an emergency for an ambulance and knowing where they lived in case they ever needed help. Christina taught the children about an app called, 'What three words,' uncase they ever needed to know their location and didn't know where they were. The children practised CPR on a dummy and put each other into the recovery position. They also learnt about what to do if somebody is choking and how to treat and take care of burns. The children were all very excited about what they had learnt and were keen to tell Mrs Leonard all about it!
Nojus- "Christina taught us how to save people's lives. If somebody isn't breathing, you can put your cheek to their mouth to see if you feel any breath and if they're not breathing you give them 5 big breaths. Then you do 30 compressions, 2 more breaths and you repeat it until the ambulance arrives."
Amelia- "If someone needs your help, you can call 999. There is a good app to download on your phone called what three words."
Peaches- "It was really useful as we practised putting each other in the recovery position."
Nojus- "If someone is not breathing, their blood is not pumping so you need to get their heart started with CPR."
Bethany- "We also learnt about burns and how to help if someone is choking. There are two ways to help if someone is choking."
