Spelling
At Cowbit St Mary's pupils in EYFS and KS1 are taught to spell as part of the Read, Write, Inc. Phonics programme.
Pupils in Year 2 - 6 are taught to spell using Active Spelling. Active Spelling is a research-centred approach to spelling, providing pupils with a deep grasp of spelling and vocabulary which they are then able to use in their independent writing. It is a whole-school approach, leading from the end of the phonics phase and built around fundamental key skills that enable children to become lifelong spellers.
- The approach uses the principles of mnemonics, images and verbal reasoning (through a dialogic talk based approach) to aid the retention of spellings and in turn develop a breadth of vocabulary.
- The model has been tested and refined to ensure alignment with the National Curriculum, with suggested spelling lists ensuring the necessary coverage of both the spelling patterns and statutory words.
