Toys from the past
Our topic this term for Elm Class is 'Toys'.
Today we were very lucky to have a visitor who bought his toys from the past. Mr Elliot bought his toys which he played with when he was little. He explained that they didn’t have any plastic toys as plastic wasn’t around when he was young and the one big thing children used was their ‘imagination’ when playing.
He bought some rocks from the beach (as he lived near Cornwall and went to the beach often) which he was able to show us the different games that he played.
In his bag he had tins with string on and played with them as stilts. He had two tins attached with string that they used in their play as telephones.
The last toy he bought was about 70 years old, which was a wooden plane made by his father. He explained that there was no money and not many toys, like we have nowadays. Many toys were made by hand with bits and bobs that people could get a hold of. He and his father painted and decorated his plane and had hours of fun with it!
